The letters addressed to the Rev. Norton Nicholls appeared in , and in Mitford published an additional volume of new letters, chiefly addressed to Mason. In the following pages I have followed Mitford's latest collations, except as regards the very numerous letters addressed to Wharton, which are all printed here directly from Gray's. In a letter dated 10 September following the sitter's death on 30 July, Walpole wrote to his friend the Rev. William Cole, the antiquary, offering to James Brown, Master of Pembroke and Gray's executor, 'a copy of a small picture I have of Mr Gray, painted soon after the publication of the Ode on Eton and after his [Brown's] death I.

Thomas Gray Thomas Gray is the author of books such as An Elegy Written In a Country Church-Yard. Books by Thomas Gray. Thomas Gray (26 December – 30 July ) was an English poet, letter-writer, classical scholar, and professor at Pembroke College, is widely known for his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, published in Gray was an extremely self-critical writer who published only 13 poems in his lifetime, despite being very popular. He was even offered the position of Poet.

Mason took great liberties with the letters, considering them less as biographical documents than as literary material to be edited and combined (see, e.g., his letter to Walpole of 28 June , where he proposes to alter Gray's French and `run two letters into one'). The book, however, is in other respects well done. Thomas Gray (including an epitaph by Mason in Gray hand) Vol 6. Correspondence with Bishops Vol. 7. Lord Mansfield Vol. 8.
